MARTYRS OF AUBENAS, Blessed. - This name designates two Jesuits, Father Giacomo Salès and the coadjutor brother Guglielmo Saltamochio, killed by the Huguenots out of hatred for the faith and especially for the Eucharist, on 7 February 1593, at A. (diocese of Viviers).

Father Salès, b. at Lezoux on 21 March 1556, was professor of philosophy and theology, alternating teaching with ministery. In November 1592 he was sent to A., which had been retaken some years earlier from the Huguenots by Catholic arms, with the task of winning back to the faith, and confirming in it, souls that were wavering or fallen. As his companion he was given Brother Saltamochio (Sautemonche), born at St-Germain-l'Herni (Clermont) in 1557. Good fruits were already beginning to be gathered, when suddenly, on the night of about 6 February, the Huguenots, breaking the agreed truce, burst unexpectedly upon A. and seized the two missionaries. Disputes about religion immediately arose, and above all about the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, in which the Calvinists, faced with the close logic of Fr. Salès, came off the worse. They then urged Fr. Salès to renounce what he had said in defense of revealed truth; but having obtained nothing, in the afternoon of 7 February they took his life. Brother Guillaume, having refused to abandon him, shared the same fate. The two martyrs were beatified on 6 June 1926. Feast on 7 February.
