SCHIAPPOLI, DOMENICO. – Jurist, born at S. Biase (Campobasso) on 26 November 1870, died at Naples on 12 May 1945. Lecturer in ecclesiastical law in 1894 at the University of Naples, in 1896 he became professor of the same discipline at the University of Macerata. Called to the University of Pavia in 1901, in 1911 he moved to that of Naples to succeed Francesco Scaduto, and remained there for thirty years.
S., a devoted pupil of Scaduto (v.), was always very close to his teacher in his conceptions and scholarly orientation: he followed his tendency to separate the study of the law of the State from that of the Church and to regard ecclesiastical law as a branch of public law, with the natural consequence that the method of treatment was identical and that the concepts and rules proper to administrative law were applicable to the institutions of this branch of law.
With Scaduto and Ruffini, he shares the merit of having restored ecclesiastical law to the position it deserved within the Italian universities.
