SCHMÖGER, CARL. - Redemptorist writer, b. at Ehingen (Württemberg) on 24 Feb. 1819, d. at Gars on 14 Aug. 1883. Ordained priest in 1842, he entered the Redemptorists at Altötting in 1850; in 1865-68 he was rector of the house at Gars on the Inn, and in 1868-83, during the Kulturkampf, superior of the province of Upper Germany.
S. produced excellent translations of certain works by St. Alfonso, St. Bonaventura, and St. Brigida; he was the biographer of the celebrated seer of Dülmen, Emmerick (v.), and editor of her visions. Having received from the Benedictine abbot Haneberg the manuscripts of Clemente Brentano (now in the general house of the Redemptorists), who had published only the Passion and the Life of the Madonna, S. published in 1858-60 the public life of Jesus in 3 vols. and, in 1867-70, in 2 vols., the life of the Seer with many visions, translated into Italian and four other languages. Finally, he published the great synthesis of the biblical visions: Das arme Leben und bittere Leiden Jesu Christi und seiner heiligsten Mutter Maria nebst den Geheimnissen des Alten
Bundes (Regensburg, 1881), in a volume of 1,210 quarto pages, with fine illustrations by his subject, Brother Massimiliano Schmalzl (4th ed., 1892, edited by G. Wiggermann).
