HANEBERG, Daniel Bonifatius. - Bishop, b. at Lenzfried (Bavaria) on 16 June 1816, d. at Speyer on 31 May 1876. After studying philology and theology at the University of Munich, he was ordained priest in 1839 and became ordinary professor of Old Testament exegesis at the University of Munich.
Having entered the Order of St Benedict at the Abbey of St Boniface in 1850, five years later he became its abbot. In 1864 he was elected bishop by the Cathedral Chapter of Trier, but declined the appointment. He did likewise two years later, when offered the sees of Cologne and Eichstätt. He was summoned to Rome by Pius IX to prepare for the Vatican Council. In 1872 he accepted the administration of the diocese of Speyer, which he governed as bishop until his death. Among his works are to be noted: *Die religiösen Altertümer der Bibel* (Munich 1869), *Geschichte der biblischen Offenbarung* (ibid. 1850), and the edition of the *Canones s. Hippolyti* (ibid. 1870).
