STAUPITZ, JOHANN von. - German theologian and mystic of the 16th century, professor of theology at Wittenberg and vicar general of the Augustinians in Germany.

He was the teacher and friend of Luther, to whom he ceded his chair in 1512 and whom he supported and protected in the early days of the revolt. In 1518 he accompanied him into the presence of the cardinal legate at Augsburg and absolved him from the bond of obedience. He later renounced the vicariate, disavowed the Lutheran doctrines and died in the Benedictine abbey of St. Peter at Salzburg (1524).

His treatises: Imitation of the Death of Jesus Christ; On the Love of God, On the Right Christian Faith and his sermons bear the influence of the German mystics of the 14th century and had an effect on Luther's spiritual formation.
