STOCCHIERO, GIUSEPPE. - Canon lawyer, b. at Arzignano (Vicenza) on 24 Sept. 1882, d. at Vicenza on 4 Dec. 1946.
Having completed his studies at the Seminary of Vicenza, he was ordained priest on 30 July 1905; after several years of pastoral care as an assistant vicar, always in the diocese of Vicenza, he became secretary to Bishop F. Ridolfi; in 1919 he obtained a degree in canon law at the Apollinare in Rome; thereafter he taught pastoral practice and administrative canon law in the schools of theology; he was a canon of the cathedral of Vicenza from 16 Dec. 1933. He had obtained qualification as a free lecturer in Canon Law at the University of Padua.
He concerned himself with pastoral administrative practice, and wrote numerous articles, pamphlets, about ten pastoral legal volumes, and another ten works on various subjects (educational, literary, historical); moreover, small manuals of piety and asceticism. His principal studies are: Pratica pastorale (1921), Il matrimonio in Italia dopo il Concordato (1929), Il Diritto penale della Chiesa e dello Stato (1932), Il Codice del Clero italiano in regime concordatorio (2nd ed., 1937), Il Beneficio ecclesiastico (1941-46).
