SUTTER, FEDELE. – Archbishop, b. at Ferrara on 16 March 1796, d. there on 30 August 1883. He entered the Capuchins on 4 October 1816; he was lector and later provincial minister. In 1843 he was named Apostolic Vicar of Tunisia and in 1844 was elected titular bishop.

Msgr. Sutter enlarged the vicariate residence, built churches, established hospices for the poor, hospitals for the sick, founded schools, bringing in nuns to staff them. Beloved by natives and foreigners, Catholics and Protestants, Turks and Jews alike; during his tenure the three beys who succeeded one another conferred upon him honorary titles.
When France entered the Tunisian regency, he insisted that the superior of the mission also be French, and so in September 1881 he returned to Rome. In recognition of his many merits, Leo XIII named him titular archbishop.
