SUTTER, FEDELE. - Archbishop, b. in Ferrara on 16 March 1796, d. there on 30 Aug. 1883. He entered the Capuchins on 4 Oct. 1816; he was a lecturer and then provincial minister; in the year 1843 he was appointed apostolic vicar of Tunisia and in 1844 he was elected titular bishop.

Mons. Sutter established the residence of the vicariate, buildings, churches, institutes and hospices for the poor, hospitals for the sick, he founded schools, calling the sisters there. Loved by natives and foreigners, Catholics and Protestants, by Turks and Jews; by the three beys who succeeded one another during S.'s stay he was honored with honorary titles.

When France entered the Tunisian regency, it wanted the superior of the mission also to be a Frenchman, so S. returned to Rome in Sept. 1881, and Leo XIII, in recompense for so many merits, named him titular archbishop.
