TAGLIACOZZO, GIOVAN BERNARDO. - Cardinal, born at Corcumello in the Marsica, died in Rome on 21 January 1449, of the family Delli Ponti. He was named Archbishop of Taranto on 20 October 1421 and resigned in 1445.
He played an important part in the Council of Basel and was first sent in April 1432, together with Andrea, Archbishop of Colossa, and the Bishop of Maguelonne, as a delegate of Eugenius IV to the Council; he arrived at Basel on 14 August and on the 23rd delivered a solemn discourse in defence of the rights and actions of the Pope, proposing the transfer of the Council; by 10 September his mission was concluded. On 7 May 1433 he was among those entrusted with presiding over the Council, an office which was renewed to him on 14 December, and on 24 April 1434 he was introduced into the Council with his colleagues. Once again he returned to Basel in February 1437 after the beginning of negotiations with the Greeks, and was involved in a notorious incident for having seized the seal of the Council, accused as a forger, and imprisoned, he managed to escape in May 1437.
