TAGLIACOZZO, GIOVAN BERNARDO. - Cardinal, b. at Corcumello in the Marsica, d. at Rome on 21 Jan. 1449, of the Delli Ponti family. He was appointed archbishop of Taranto on 20 Oct. 1421 and resigned it in 1445.
He took an important part in the Council of Basel, and a first time in Apr. 1432 he was, together with Andrew archbishop of Colossae and with the bishop of Maguelonne, a delegate of Eugene IV to the Council; he arrived at Basel on 14 Aug. and there delivered on the 23rd a solemn discourse in defense of the rights and the conduct of the Pope, proposing the transfer of the Council; on 10 Sept. his mission had ended. On 7 May 1433 he was among those charged with presiding over the Council, an office that was renewed for him on 14 Dec., and on 24 Apr. 1434 he was introduced into the Council together with his colleagues. Once again he returned to Basel in Feb. 1437 after the beginning of the negotiations with the Greeks, and he was the subject of a sensational incident for having seized the seal of the Council, on which account he was accused as a forger, and, imprisoned, he managed to escape in May 1437. On 18 Dec. 1439 Eugene IV created him cardinal and on 20 May 1440 appointed him legate to Naples to procure peace between Alfonso of Aragon and René of Anjou, but he obtained only a brief truce. On 7 March 1443 he received the bishopric of Palestrina; he was major penitentiary and protector of the Augustinian Order.
