He studied at Perugia, was canon at St Peter’s and held several abbacies. He took part in the Council of Trent. He was a member of the Apostolic Chamber. He was superintendent of the papal grain supply. Bishop of Parma in 1560, he held a synod there in 1564. He was created cardinal in 1565. By order of Pius V he presided over the repair of consular roads in the Papal States, was legate at Bologna and in Romagna (1570) and later for the whole Papal States except Bologna (1580) to suppress brigandage. He was prefect of the Segnatura. The assignment of him to the see of Narni from May to 25 November 1537 is disputed.
