TALIJA, URBANO. - Franciscan theologian, born at Lopud in 1859, died at Ragusa in Dalmatia in 1943. Provincial, professor, and rector of the Franciscan theological school of Ragusa for 45 years; member of the Croatian theological academy, of the Society for Philosophical and Theological Studies, etc.
He contributed to various Croatian, German, and Italian journals. His scholarly activity comprises about 450 writings; among his printed works the following deserve mention: Socijalizam (Socialism; Ragusa 1905); Errores scientifici et historici and hujigama nadahnutim (nei libri ispirati) and Citationes tacitae (Zagreb 1909); Religijozna skepsa i kril. apologetika (Religious scepticism and Christian apologetics, Sarajevo 1913); Neumriost čovječje duše, 2nd ed. (The immortality of the soul, Ragusa 1925); Lijek duševnim bolima (Remedy for spiritual sufferings, Spalato 1929); Isus Krist u svijetlu trijezne i netrijezne kritike (Jesus Christ in the light of sound and unsound criticism, ibid. 1933); Etički sistem sv. Augustina (The ethical system of St Augustine, Belgrade 1934). In addition to his priestly apostolate as confessor, preacher, and lecturer, T., through his critical and penetrating investigations, aroused very lively controversies and made a strong contribution to the development of Croatian theology in the first decades of the 20th century.
