TALIJA, URBANO. - Franciscan theologian, b. at Lopud in 1859, d. at Ragusa in Dalmatia in 1943. Provincial, professor and rector of the Franciscan theological study of Ragusa for 45 years, member of the Croatian theological academy, of the Society of Philosophical and Theological Studies, etc.
He was a contributor to various Croatian, German and Italian journals. His scholarly activity comprises about 450 writings; among the printed works worthy of mention are: Socijalizam (Socialism; Ragusa 1905); Errores scientifici et historici and hujigama nadahnutim (nei libri ispirati) and Citationes tacitae (Zagreb 1909); Religijozna skepsa i kril. apologetika (Religious skepticism and Christian apologetics, Serajevo 1913); Neumriost čovječje duše, 2nd ed. (The immortality of the soul, Ragusa 1925); Lijek duševnim bolima (Medicine for spiritual sorrows, Spalato 1929); Isus Krist u svijetlu trijezne i netrijezne kritike (Jesus Christ in the light of sound and unsound criticism, ibid. 1933); Etički sistem sv. Augustina (The ethical system of St. Augustine, Belgrade 1934). Besides his priestly apostolate as confessor, preacher and lecturer, T. with his acute critical investigation stirred up very lively polemics and made a strong contribution to the development of Croatian theology in the first decades of the 20th century.
