He was archpriest of St. Peter's in the Vatican and one of the four Italian cardinals who took part in the Conclave of Apr. 1378. Indeed, on the afternoon of 8 Apr., while the exasperated Roman people were invading the rooms of the Vatican where the Conclave was being held, he was presented as the elected Pontiff and amid the tumult was about to receive homage. Protesting that he was not the one elected, he pointed to the man who later became Urban VI as the elected one; meanwhile the cardinals were slipping away. While his Italian colleagues were drawing near to the rebel cardinals, T. died on 7 Sept. 1378, protesting that Urban VI was the legitimate Pontiff.
