TEOFILO, bishop of CASTABALA. - Already bishop of Eleuteropoli in Palestine before 360, he was transferred to Castabala in Cilicia through the action of Silvano of Tarso (Sozomeno, Hist. eccl., IV, 24).
An adherent of the Homoiousian doctrine, in 363 he signed, together with others, a letter to the emperor Gioviano requesting confirmation of the decisions of Seleucia, condemnation of the Anomoeans, and the convocation of a new council (Socrate, Hist. eccl., III, 25). In 365 he was among the delegation sent to Pope Liberio; in Rome he subscribed to the faith of Nicaea and condemned the Homoean formula of Rimini. Having returned to the East, he took part in the Council of Tiana, at which the conduct of the legates was approved and communion with the West restored. In 373, siding with Eustazio di Sebaste, he took part in the bitter controversy against St Basil; later, however, the Saint wrote him a letter assuring him that he had forgiven the injuries done to him and that he still cherished communion with him. He died after 376.
