TEOGNIDE. - Bishop of Nicea. An intransigent Arian, he took part in the Council of Nicea in 325.
Compelled by circumstances, he subscribed to the Creed; but shortly afterwards, taking part in the intrigues of the heretics in order to undermine its authority, he was deposed and banished to Gaul, and Cresto was appointed in his place to the see. Recalled after three years and restored to his Church, together with Eusebio di Nicomedia he led the struggle against the ὁμοούσιος and against St. Atanasio. In 330 he took part in the Synod of Antioch at which Eustazio was deposed, and in 335 he attended the Council of Tyre. He was a member of the mission sent to the Mareotis to gather testimony against St. Atanasio, and in 336 he helped, at Constantinople, to have the Saint driven into exile. After the death of Eusebio, he was the acknowledged leader of Arianism, and in 341 he cooperated in the intrusion of Macedonio into the Church of Constantinople. He died shortly before 347.
