THEOGNIS. - Bishop of Nicaea. An intransigent Arian, he took part in the Council of Nicaea in 325.

Compelled by circumstances, he subscribed to the Symbol of faith; but shortly afterwards, taking part in the intrigues of the heretics to undermine its value, he was deposed and relegated to Gaul, and replaced in his see by Chrestus. Recalled after 3 years and restored to his Church, together with Eusebius of Nicomedia, he was at the head of the struggle against the ὁμοούσιος and against St. Athanasius. In 330 he took part in the Synod of Antioch, in which Eustathius was deposed, and in 335 he was at the Council of Tyre. He was part of the mission sent into the Mareotis to gather testimony against St. Athanasius, and in 336 he helped at Constantinople to have the Saint driven into exile. After the death of Eusebius he was the recognized head of Arianism, and in 341 he cooperated in the intrusion of Macedonius into the Church of Constantinople. He died shortly before 347.
