THALHOFER, VALENTIN. - Liturgist and theologian, b. at Unterroth near Ulm, in Germany, on 21 Jan. 1825, d. there on 17 Sept. 1891.
From 1850 to 1863 he was professor of exegesis and biblical archaeology at Dillingen-on-the-Danube; from 1863 to 1876 he taught pastoral theology at Munich, where he directed the *Georgianum*; from 1876 he held the chair of liturgy at Eichstätt, where in 1877 he became dean and in 1889 provost of the cathedral chapter.
A prolific writer in the biblical-exegetical, patristic, and pastoral fields, and especially in liturgy, in 1869–88 he directed the German edition of the works of the Church Fathers. He published *Erklärung der Psalmen* (Dillingen 1857), *Opferlehre des Hebräerbriefes* (ibid. 1855), *Die Opfer des A. und N. Bundes* (Munich 1870), and prepared a new edition of the *Rituale Evstettense-Romanum* and a *Manuale Rituum* (1879–80). His principal and most important work, however, was the *Handbuch der katholischen Liturgik* (1883–93), with supplements on the canonical hours from his manuscripts by A. Schmid. A new edition of vol. 1 was issued in 1894 by A. Ebner, and the entire work was later recast by L. EISENHOFER, LUDWIC (v.), Freiburg im Br. 1912–32; 2nd ed. ibid. 1940–41.
