SCHMID, ALOIS von. - Philosopher and theologian, b. 22 Dec. 1825 at Zaumberg bei Immenstadt (Bavaria), d. 16 March 1910 at Munich. Having completed his studies at Augsburg and Munich, he was ordained priest in 1849.
He taught at the Gymnasium of Zweibrücken (1850–52), whence he became professor of philosophy at Dillingen (1853–66); then, for 37 years, he held (until 1903) the chair of dogmatics and apologetics at the University of Munich. In his numerous publications he sought to bring traditional Scholastic philosophy into contact with modern thought, particularly that of Kant, whose subjectivism he sought to correct, without always making a clear distinction between the natural and the supernatural. Consequently accused of rationalism, he vigorously defended himself against the attacks of Schäfer (v.) and Glossner. He wrote: Bisthumssynode (2 vols., s. l. 1850–51); Entwicklungsgesch. der Hegelschen Logik (Regensburg 1858); Thomistische u. Scotist. Gewissheitslehre (Dillingen 1859); Wissenschaftliche Richtungen auf dem Gebiete des Katholikismus (1862); Wissenschaft u. Gefühlsvermögen (1884); Erkenntnisslehre (2 vols., Freiburg im Breisgau 1890); Apologetik als spekulative Grundlegung der Theologie (1900).
