Ordained a priest in 1878, he taught dogmatic and moral theology at Rodez, at Baltimore and at St. Sulpice in Paris. Superior of the novitiate (1915-26) at Issy-le-Molineaux, he devoted himself to the study of ascetics. His publications continue to enjoy much favor; in them, besides solid doctrine and rich documentation, there is evident the author's concern to be practical, up to date and responsive to modern needs.
He wrote: Synopsis theologiae dogmaticae (3 vols., Paris-Rome 1894-96; 25th ed. ibid. 1942); Synopsis theologiae moralis et pastoralis (3 vols., ibid. 1902); Brevior synopsis theologiae dogmaticae (ibid. 1911); Brevior synopsis theologiae moralis et pastoralis (ibid. 1913); Précis de théologie ascétique et mystique (ibid. 1923), a work translated in a short time into ten languages; Dogmes générateurs de la piété (Paris 1926); La divinisation de la souffrance (ibid. 1931); Jésus vivant dans l'Église (ibid. 1932). His collaboration with dictionaries and Catholic periodicals was extensive, such as DThC, Cath. Enc., Americ. eccles. review, Vie spirituelle.
