TOURNELY, HONORÉ. - Theologian, b. at Antibes (Nice) on 28 Aug. 1638 to a poor family, d. in Paris on 26 Dec. 1729. Through the good offices of his uncle he studied in Paris, where, already a priest (perhaps in 1685), he took his degree in 1688. After four years of teaching at the University of Douai, he was called to the Sorbonne, where for 24 years he held the chair of theology (1692-1716).
A positive and speculative theologian at once, regarded as the greatest of his age, he opposed Augustinianism and the doctrines of Descartes (v.), of Fénelon (v.) and of Mary of Agreda (v.), but above all he earned merit by combating the errors of Quesnel (v.) and of Jansenism in general, whose condemnation by means of the bull Unigenitus he had accepted by the theologians of the Sorbonne. He was, however, a tenacious supporter of Gallicanism; he therefore made the judgment of the pope, whose infallibility he nevertheless admitted, depend on universal ecclesiastical consent.
His works were highly esteemed for solidity of doctrine and clarity of exposition. Principal: Praelectiones theologicae (16 vols., Paris 1725-30). U. Robinet made a compendium of it for scholastic use (2 vols., ibid. 1731); P. Collet, having added the moral part, published it in 10 vols.: H. T. cursus theologicus scholastico-dogmaticus et moralis (Venice 1731-46).
