Very common in Romanesque architecture, especially in Lombardy, at the intersection of two naves, it sometimes assumed, as in the churches of the Benedictines and Cistercians, the character of a true bell tower due to its great height. T. often appear in Gothic-style architecture and also during the Renaissance, particularly in Lombard buildings with Bramantesque features (see also CUPOLA; TAMBURIO).
