TIBURZIUS, Saint, Martyr. — He was buried on the Via Labicana in the cemetery *inter duas lauros*. Nothing is known about his life or the time of his martyrdom, which Damasus indicates as «tempore quo gladius secuit pia viscera matris» in the brief poem placed on his tomb, preserved in epigraphic collections (A. Ferrúa, *Epigr. Damasiana*, Città del Vaticano 1942, pp. 164 sg.).
The *Passio s. Sebastiani* makes him a «vir clarissimus» (BHL, 7543). His feast is marked on «III Id. Aug.» (11 Aug.) in both the Gelasian and Gregorian Sacramentaries and in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum*, where, however, the exact note «Romae via Lavicana inter duas lauros natale Tiburti» was erroneously interpolated with the names of Valerian and Cecilia. T. is recorded as buried in the above-ground area to the north of the mausoleum of St Helena in the *Notitia ecclesiarum* (R. Valentini - G. Zucchetti, *Codice topogr. della città di Roma*, II, Roma 1942, p. 83); he is also listed among the martyrs of this road in the other two itineraries of the 7th century (ibid., pp. 113, 146). An oratory was built over his tomb and restored by Pope Adrian I (*Liber Pontificalis*, I, p. 500). Pope Gregory IV (827–44) translated his relics to St Peter’s Basilica (ibid., II, p. 74).

T. is depicted in a fresco on the vault of a cubicle in the cemetery *inter duas lauros*, acclaiming the divine Lamb together with the other local martyrs Gorgonius, Marcellinus and Peter (Wilpert, *Pitture*, tav. 252).
