TURPIN (TULPINO, TURPINO). - Benedictine, archbishop of Reims, b. in the first half of the 8th century, d. at Reims on 2 September 800.
A monk at St. Denis, elected archbishop of Reims in 753, he assisted with 11 other French bishops at the Lateran Council of 769, in which the antipope Constantine of Nepi was condemned. At Charlemagne's request, Pope Adrian sent him the pallium and confirmed the rights of his see.
The legend of Roland took possession of him, making him a paladin of Charlemagne and having him appear in many chansons de geste as one of the 12 Peers of France. To him was in fact attributed the chronicle or Historia de vita Caroli Magni et Rolandi, a legendary narrative of the Emperor's crusade and of his warriors against Spain, written ca. the middle of the 12th century, handed down in more than 100 manuscripts and translated into French, Provençal, etc., whence it passed into the cantari and into Provençal and Italian poems (it suffices to recall the Orlando furioso of Ariosto).
