THÉVENET, CLAUDINE. - In religion Maria of St. Ignatius, foundress of the Sisters of Jesus and Mary, b. at Lyon on 30 March 1774, d. at Fourvière (Lyon) on 13 Feb. 1837.
After witnessing the death by guillotine of her two brothers and having received from them the exhortation to forgive their killers, she devoted herself to an intense life of works of charity and assistance, gathering around her a number of faithful co-workers. All together on 31 July 1816, under the impulse of the abbé Coindre, they constituted themselves as the Association of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary under the patronage of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The associates, meeting from time to time, divided the work among themselves by sections: the section of instruction, of alms, of consolation for the sick, of edification for lukewarm Catholics, of girls in danger, of good reading, etc. Five years later the group was transformed into a new religious congregation, in the house of Fourvière, which continued the apostolate with greater energy, broadening its field with workshop-schools, hospices, boarding houses, colleges. The foundress did not see the mustard seed expand into a great tree, because death overtook her while the wrongs of politicians were making the work of her sisters more difficult. But the Institute was not slow to spread in France and abroad and in the mission territories. In 1901 the Mother House moved to Rome.
