Tongiorgi, Salvatore

TONGIORGI, SALVATORE. - Philosopher, b. in Rome on 25 Dec. 1820, d. there on 12 Nov. 1863. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1837. He was professor of philosophy at the Roman College from 1853 until his death.

His Institutiones philosophiae (3 vols., 1861) and the Institutiones compendiariae philosophiae moralis (1863), notable for solidity of doctrine and clarity of exposition, met with favor and had numerous editions. Yielding to the influence of his time, he nevertheless departed from Scholastic doctrines in not a few questions of ontology, cosmology and psychology. The best part of his work is the Logica, which comprises an excellent treatise on dialectic, placed before the major logic.
