Ughelli, Ferdinando

UGHELLI, FERDINANDO. - Scholar, b. in Florence on 21 March 1594, d. in Rome on 19 May 1670.

Having been set to literary studies, he entered the Congregation of St. Bernard of the Cistercian Order and later became abbot of the monastery of Sts. Vincent and Anastasius at the Acque Salvie, where he was buried. To him is owed the first documented history of the dioceses of Italy, known under the title Italia sacra (v.); he also left Cardinalium elogia of the Cistercian order (Florence 1624) and other works on the Order itself; genealogical notices on the Roman family of the Capizucchi (Rome 1653); additions to the Vitae of Ciacconio in the 1650 edition, and other minor works.
