VEREPAEUS, SIMON. - Humanist and theologian, b. at Dommelen-Valkenswaard (Netherlands) in 1552, d. at Bois-le-Duc in 1598.
"Magister artium" at the University of Louvain on 28 March 1545 and ordained a priest, he became a professor in 1550 at the chapter school of Hilvarenbeek; here he began composing his manuals for the school. For a short time he was rector of the monastery of Thabor and Mechelen (Malines); but in 1566 he was forced by the troubles to go to Cologne, where the Jesuits urged him to continue his manuals, among which were the Institutionum scholasticorum libri tres. Meanwhile he had already published his very well-known book of prayers: Precationum piarum enchiridion (Antwerp 1565). After many journeys, he settled at Bois-le-Duc, where until his death he was rector of the chapter school; there he published: Primae studiorum exercitationes (1585); Praeceptiones de figuris (1590); Copia (1590); and he revised his Grammatica, which was still in use in the 19th century. V. is an example of a Christian educator of the Catholic Reformation.
