VEREPAEUS, SIMON. - Humanist and theologian, b. at Dommelen-Valkenswaard (Netherlands) in 1552, d. at ’s-Hertogenbosch in 1598.
“Magister artium” at the University of Louvain on 28 March 1545 and ordained a priest, he became professor at the chapter school of Hilvarenbeek in 1550; there he began the composition of his school manuals. For a short time he was rector of the monastery of Thabor at Mechelen (Malines); but in 1566 the disturbances forced him to go to Cologne, where the Jesuits urged him to continue his manuals, among which were the Institutionum scholasticorum libri tres. In the meantime he had already published his very well-known prayer book: Precationum piarum enchiridion (Antwerp, 1565). After many journeys, he settled at ’s-Hertogenbosch, where until his death he was rector of the chapter school; there he published: Primae studiorum exercitationes (1585); Praeceptiones de figuris (1590); Copia (1590); and revised his Grammatica, which was still in use in the nineteenth century.
