VERECONDO. — Bishop of Junca in the African province of Byzacena, flourishing in the sixth century, died at Chalcedon in the hospice of S. Euphemia in 552.
A year earlier he had been summoned to the Byzantine court because of his opposition to the condemnation of the Three Chapters and was condemned to exile. V. composed a poem in 212 hexameters, De satisfactione poenitentiae (ed. J. B. Pitra, Spicil. Solesm., IV, Paris 1858, pp. 138–43, and more recently E. Kulendorff, Lund 1943), a Commentary on nine canticles of the Old Testament (ed. Pitra, op. cit., 1–131), and extracts from the Acts of the Council of Chalcedon (PL 68, 1012–14). On the other hand, the Exhortatio paenitendi (ed. Pitra, op. cit., pp. 132–37) and the Critias (ibid., pp. 144–65) are spurious. V. was well acquainted with classical culture.
