VITTORE, bishop of TUNNUNA - A zealous supporter of the Three Chapters, he lived in the sixth century in Proconsular Africa, and died shortly after 566.
He opposed Justinian’s policy in favour of the Monophysites and was therefore sent into exile in 555. From Egypt he was transferred to Constantinople around 564 for a further interrogation. V., steadfast in his faith, was confined in a nearby monastery. He composed a chronicle of the world, beginning with the creation, of which only the most important part has survived, namely that which, continuing the Chronicle of Prospero of Aquitaine, begins with the year 444. In it, drawing upon Eastern and Western sources, the events of Africa and of the Byzantine Empire are reported individually. For the final years V. witness. Despite certain defects, V.’s Chronicle has positive value for the history of that period.
