VITTORE and CORONA, saints, martyrs. — They are commemorated in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum on May 14 as martyrs of Egypt.
Their names, however, recur on other days and with different geographical indications. In addition to Egypt, they have been attributed to Syria, several cities in Italy (Orte, Feltre, Osimo), and Sicily. The *Passio*, preserved in various Latin, Greek, and Oriental versions (BHL, 859-850; Suppl. 8583 b-d; BHG, 1864-65; BHO, 1242-44), is highly legendary. V. was a soldier at the time of Antoninus Pius; after being arrested and subjected to harsh torments, he was finally beheaded. Corona, the young wife of another soldier, encouraged V. to persevere during his trial; for this reason, she was condemned and, tied between two palm trees, torn in two.
