VITTORE and CORONA, saints, martyrs. — They are commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 14 May as martyrs of Egypt.
Their names, however, recur on other days and with other topographical indications. In addition to Egypt, they have been assigned to Syria, to several cities of Italy (Otricoli, Feltre, Osimo), and to Sicily. The Passio preserved in various Latin, Greek, and Eastern recensions (BHL, 8559-8563; Suppl. 8583 b-d; BHG, 1864-65; BHO, 1242-44) is highly legendary. V. was a soldier in the time of Antoninus Pius; arrested and subjected to cruel tortures, he was finally beheaded; Corona, the young wife of another soldier, witnessing V.’s trial, encouraged him to remain steadfast; she was therefore condemned and, tied to two palm trees, torn in two.
