VICTOR, Saint, Martyr. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on July 21.

Venantius Fortunatus mentions him (Carm., VIII, 3; X, 10), and St. Gregory of Tours attests that the basilica dedicated to him in Marseilles (v.), built over his tomb, was the destination of frequent pilgrimages and that many miracles were worked there (Hist. Franc., IX, 20, 22; In gloria martyr., 77). The Passio was reworked several times (BHL, 8569-72); according to H. Quentin, the oldest recension would be the one summarized in the Martyrology of Lyon. V. was a soldier in Maximian's army; having refused to take part in the idolatrous sacrifices, he was arrested by the tribune Asterius and handed over to the prefect Eutychius. The latter, after mocking and torturing him, condemned him to be crushed by a millstone. It therefore seems that V. perished during the military persecution of Diocletian.
