VITTORE, saint, martyr. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 21 July.
He is recalled by Venanzio Fortunato (Carm., VIII, 3; X, 10), and s. Gregorio di Tours attests that the Marsiglia (v.), built over his tomb, was the destination of frequent pilgrimages and that many miracles were performed there (Hist. Franc., IX, 20, 22; In gloria martyr., 77). The Passio has been reworked several times (BHL, 8569-72); according to H. Quentin, the oldest recension would be that summarized in the Martyrology of Lyon. V. was a soldier in Massimiano’s army; having refused to take part in idolatrous sacrifices, he was arrested by the tribune Asterio and handed over to the prefect Eutichio. After mocking and torturing him, the latter condemned him to be crushed by a millstone. It therefore appears that V. perished during Diocleziano’s military persecution.
