WUNIBALD (Wunnib., Wynnebaldus), Saint. - Of Anglo-Saxon origin, in 720 he went with his brother Willibald (v.) on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he took up the monastic life.

In 739 his cousin St. Boniface took him along on the return journey to Germany, ordaining him a priest. Thus he became a missionary in an area of Thuringia, with his residence at Sülzenbrücken. Later sent to the region of the Vils (Oberpfalz), he labored there for three years without fruit. Mainz was afterward his missionary field, but, not finding himself at ease there, he left for Eichstätt to join his brother the bishop.

The monastery of Heidenheim was the starting point of his new apostolate in the Sualafeld. He died on 18 Dec. 761, and was buried by his brother Willibald in the choir of the church of Heidenheim. Feast day 18 Dec.
