ZAGURI, MARCO. - Bishop b. in Venice in 1738, d. in Vicenza on 12 Sept. 1810.
After completing his studies in Bologna and Padua, he was ordained a priest and devoted himself to research in philosophy and sociology, publishing in 1776 a successful volume (of which several editions were made), entitled Piano per dar regolato sistema al moderno spirito filosofico. In it he introduces, with fine irony, an innovator who grotesquely extols Enlightenment and rationalist theories, in such a way as to bring out their contradictions and errors. The work earned him, at the hands of Pius VI in 1778, appointment as bishop of Ceneda (today Vittorio Veneto), whence he was later promoted to the see of Vicenza. A bishop in the difficult years of the French invasion, he was a strenuous defender of the rights of the Church and did much to save the supporters of the old regime from Jacobin persecutions.
With admirable frankness truly evangelical, Z. set out, in a series of learned and courageous homilies (later collected for publication), the antinomies between Catholic teaching and the revolutionary postulates, warning his clergy and the faithful against embracing ideologies contrary to religion and morality. Particularly noteworthy are the two [homilies] to parish priests... on the true character of subordination and subjection (1798).
