Bull confirming the possessions and privileges of the Church of Scala

Bull of Pope Celestine III ·

1 forever.

2 Placed, by the Lord's disposition, in the watchtower of the Apostolic See, we ought to love our brother bishops, both those near and those far distant, with firm charity, and to grant speedy effect to their petitions.

3 Therefore, venerable brother in Christ, hearkening to your prayers, we receive under the protection of blessed Peter and our own the Apostolic Church, which you are known to preside over by God's gift, and we strengthen it with the privilege of this present writing. Decreeing that all and whatsoever possessions, whatever goods the same Church now justly and canonically possesses, or in the future shall be able to acquire through the grant of Pontiffs, the largesse of kings or princes, or the offering of the faithful, or by other just means, with God's help, shall remain firm to you and your successors, and inviolate, in which we have deemed these things to be expressed in their proper terms. The Scala Maior with its appurtenances as far as the river which divides Scala from Ravello on the part of the north to the boundary of Cicini, and thence to St. Angelo of Petrabene, where the boundary between Scala and Ravello is on the western part, the whole mountain of Candirceli as far as Petratti Palumbarum as it goes through the plain and the mountain of Cerbellani, with its appurtenances, as far as the dairy, on the southern side at Planello, which is under St. Helena as far as the river Camneti, and it goes through Tabernatam and the mountain of Scanni, and the arch of Patalarum, and returns to the same Cerbellani, whatever is held in the city of Amalfi, the church of St. Barbara with its cells and all its appurtenances. Moreover, upon your death or that of your successors, the bishop of the same place, no one shall be elected to the same Church as bishop unless whom the canons of the same Church, or the wiser part of their council according to God, shall have provided to be elected.

4 We decree therefore that it shall be lawful for no one whatsoever to presume to disturb the aforesaid Church, or to take away its possessions, to retain what has been taken, to diminish, or to harass by any vexations whatsoever, but all things shall be preserved inviolate and whole to you and your successors for whose governance and sustenance they have been granted, to be profitable to their uses, saving the authority of the Apostolic See and the due reverence to your metropolitan. If therefore any ecclesiastical or secular person in the future, knowing of this page of our constitution, shall presume to come against it rashly, being admonished a second or third time, unless he shall correct his guilt by worthy satisfaction, let him be deprived of his power and the dignity of his honour, and let him know that he shall answer to divine judgment for the perpetrated iniquity, and let him be alien from the most sacred Body and Blood of God and our Lord the Redeemer, and in the final examination let him be subject to strict punishment. But to all who shall preserve their rights to the same place, let there be the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that both here they may receive the fruit of good action, and before the strict Judge may find the rewards of eternal peace. Amen. Amen. I, Celestine, bishop of the Catholic Church.

1 in perpetuo.

Amen. Amen. Io Celestino della cattolica Chiesa vescovo.
