Brief to the Bishops of Angers on the University of Angers

Brief of Pope Pius X ·

OF ANGERS, USES ON BEHALF OF ITS PATRONS LETTERS FULL OF VENERATION AND RESPECT, PRESENTED TO THE MOST BLESSED FATHER.

1 Venerable brethren, greetings and apostolic blessing. — We have been not a little refreshed by the most obliging letters which you, assembling at Angers in your customary manner, sent to Us by common counsel on the 1st day of July: for you brought forward many reasons for consolation, whereby the constant cares by which We are troubled might find some respite. That the doctors of the Athenæum of Angers, as you write, religiously impart, and the students diligently receive, the pure and integral doctrine of the Catholic Church, fills Us with singular joy; and that, adhering wholeheartedly to Our Letter Pascendi, they regard Modernism as if they were ignorant of it, so uplifts and comforts Us that We cannot refrain from congratulating you most warmly, and honouring the masters and students with public testimony of praise: indeed, We are pleased to command you to assure them by Our words that they are loved by the common Father of the faithful no less than they are praised.

2 But there are also other reasons why We admire your diligent and careful labour. For you have taken care that the disciplines which began to be taught from the beginning of the Athenæum should not only remain firm and flourish, but should also be increased in number by the addition of those which pertain both to the science of agriculture and rural affairs, and to the laws and rights of commerce: which indeed ought to redound to no small honour to you at this time, when We see that elsewhere new disciplines are not being taught but those already established are being abolished. Nor can We pass over in silence how great and how many benefits have flowed into your dioceses from this illustrious home of letters and the finest arts. For from it have come forth, endowed with Christian sense and thoroughly equipped with doctrine, both schoolmasters, by whom all your colleges and some seminaries of clerics are supplied with teachers; and men learned in law, who everywhere in the courts diligently and religiously conduct cases; and finally very many others, who vigorously and with great courage advance the Catholic cause among your people. Thus it has come to pass that from the University of Angers depends the force and efficacy of all those institutions which have been most usefully established in these regions to protect the piety and integrity of youth, whose chief glory is that they have firmly and vigorously retained, more than others, the faith handed down by their ancestors and the worship of piety.

3 But from that same letter of yours We have learned that so noble and so fruitful an Athenæum does not have returns so great as to suffice, nor is money contributed in sufficient measure, so that provision for its perpetual existence can be said to have been made. It is indeed to be lamented that the Catholics of western Gaul, though they wish it, cannot remedy its poverty, since they must meet so many other needs with their generosity. And yet, who would not justly marvel at the doctors of Angers? For, lest they should allow such a school of Christian wisdom to perish, they have professed themselves to be of such small means as is scarcely credible, and, in an example unprecedented to this day, have willingly bound themselves as pledges and have not hesitated to answer with their own money.

4 Therefore, since We are moved by the consciousness of apostolic duty to provide in every way for the stability of your Athenæum, lest it fall into extreme peril with great detriment to religion, We wish at last to accomplish what Our predecessor of happy memory Leo XIII, in a Letter given to the Archbishop of Rennes on the 30th day of September 1893, had proposed to himself to accomplish at a more opportune time. Yielding therefore to your repeated prayers, because necessity absolutely forbids the matter to be deferred any longer, We grant to you that three dioceses from Brittany, namely Vannes, Quimper, and Saint-Brieuc, shall now be so joined to yours that, freed from the burdens which they have hitherto borne for the Catholic Athenæum of Paris, they shall henceforth, imitating the Metropolitan See of Rennes, join with you in providing aid and assistance for the support of the University of Angers. In this matter, We look especially to this, that We may both impart some help to the Institute so dear to you, and make known to you and to all those who have spared no labour or expense for its sake Our grateful affection.

5 We do not at all deny that some loss may befall the Athenæum of Paris from this change of circumstances in the present time. But what may not be hoped for from the Catholics of Gaul? We therefore exhort them most earnestly to wish to aid the Parisian Institute so generously and liberally that no loss whatever may appear to have befallen it. And if they do this, they will know that they are doing something most pleasing to Us and, for that reason also, that they are rendering the best service to the Church and to the common welfare.

6 As for the rest, as a pledge of divine recompense and a token of Our paternal benevolence, We most lovingly impart to you, venerable brethren, and to your clergy and people the apostolic blessing.

7 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on the 15th day of August, in the eleventh year of Our Pontificate.

8 1913, PIUS PP. X.

1 Venerabili fratelli, salute e benedizione apostolica.
