Apostolic letter approving the Marian Society in France

Apostolic letter of Pope Gregory XVI ·

APOSTOLIC LETTERS
The Marian Congregation is approved in perpetuity in Gaul *.
GREGORY PP. XVI.
for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

1 The salvation of all nations, the cause of which We have received from the Prince of Pastors and Bishop of souls, compels Us to be continually vigilant, so that We leave nothing untried by which the name of the Lord may be praised from the rising of the sun to its setting and the most holy Catholic faith, without which it is impossible to please God, may flourish and shine forth everywhere throughout the lands. Wherefore with singular paternal benevolence of Our mind We especially favour those ecclesiastical men who, bound together in society, mindful of their institution and vocation, do not cease to exhort the peoples in sound doctrine through the preaching of the divine word and the manifold dispensation of God's grace, and strive with all care and diligence to bring forth abundant fruits of virtue and honesty in the vineyard of the Lord. We were indeed affected with no small pleasure when We learned that Our beloved son Claude Collin and certain priests of the diocese of Belley in Gaul had many years ago laid the foundations of a new society of religious men under the title of the Society of Mary. This society aims especially at this, that the glory of God and the honour of His most holy Mother may be increased, and the Roman Church propagated, both through the Christian instruction of children and also through missions even to the uttermost regions of the world. Now indeed, since such a Society has been propagated in the dioceses especially of Belley, Lyons and Grenoble, with the favour of divine providence, and certain priests of the same society have been sent by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith to promote the Catholic religion in the islands of the South Indies; therefore the priests of the same society, in order that it may flourish and grow more and more, have humbly besought Us with prayer that We should not only confirm the society itself by Our apostolic authority, but also grant that the priests of the same society may elect a supreme moderator or general president by whom they may be governed, and may emit simple vows. We therefore, to whom nothing is more important, nothing more desirable, than to amplify the glory of God and to provide most earnestly for the spiritual good of all peoples, having received the most weighty testimonies of Our venerable brothers the archbishop administrator of the church of Lyons, and the bishops of Belley and Grenoble, from which We have perceived that many goods and advantages can redound to the Christian commonwealth from this society, with the counsel of Our venerable brothers the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and the consultations of bishops and superiors of regulars, have deemed it right to accede to these supplications with ready and willing mind. Wherefore, wishing to favour all and each to whom these letters are favourable with special benevolence, and absolving and deeming absolved from any ecclesiastical censures, sentences and penalties of excommunication and interdict imposed in any manner and for any cause whatsoever, We by Our apostolic authority approve and confirm by these letters the Society or Congregation of Priests of the Society of which mention has been made, and by the same authority We grant to the priests of the same society the power by virtue of which they may freely and lawfully elect a supreme moderator or general president and may emit simple vows. To the same supreme moderator moreover We grant the faculty by the aid of which he may release the priests of that society from the aforesaid simple vows.

2 Finally, to the same congregation entrusted with the affairs and consultations of bishops and superiors of regulars We reserve the examination of the rules of the same society.

3 We will this, decreeing that these present letters are firm, valid and efficacious and shall be and shall obtain and secure their full and complete effects, and that they shall most fully avail in all things and through all things to those to whom it pertains and shall pertain in the future in these and future times, and that they be respectively inviolably observed by them; and thus in the aforesaid matters by any ordinary and delegated judges, even auditors of causes of Our apostolic palace, judgment should be rendered and decision made, and that it be null and void if otherwise anything contrary to these things should happen to be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority knowingly or unknowingly.

4 Notwithstanding as often as it shall be necessary, the constitutions and ordinances of Our predecessor of happy memory Benedict XIV concerning the division of matters, and others issued by apostolic, provincial and synodal councils general or special, and all other things to the contrary whatsoever.

5 Given at Rome at St. Peter's under the Fisherman's ring on the twenty-ninth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six, in the sixth year of Our pontificate.

LITTERAE APOSTOLICAE
Approbatur in perpetuum Congregatio Mariana in Gallia *.
GREGORIUS PP, XVI.

Eidem vero supremo moderatori facultatem tribuimus, cuius ope illius societatis presbyteros a commemoratis simplicibus votis solvere queat.
