Bull erecting the cathedral church of Chieti into a metropolitan archbishopric
Erection of the cathedral church of Theate into a metropolitan church with jurisdiction, superiority and appointment of suffragans
1 Clement, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
2 Over all the churches of the world, with Him disposing it, who commands all things, and to whom all things serve, we, though unequal in mind, being constituted, lift up the eyes of our mind in the circuit of the Lord's vineyard, after the manner of a watchful shepherd, to inspect what is fitting for the state of those churches themselves, what prosperous and happy work ought to be expended concerning them and their state; and, strengthened by divine protection, by which He disposes all things from His kindness for the salvation of His Christian faithful people, we take care to direct the parts of our ministry usefully to those things which are fitting for the state of such churches, as we perceive in the Lord to be salutarily expedient.
3 § 1. Indeed, considering the city of Theate of the Theatines, in the center of the province of Abruzzo, decorated and... the church of the kingdom of Sicily, the number of which, which, surrounded by the river Celebris, outside and within itself nine cities and very many towns and fortresses collected to it by Felix...
4 bishop, now, on account of its excellence, is known to have its own viceroy, constituted, and the head of the whole aforesaid province, and by the kings of Sicily of blessed memory, who were in office at the time, fortified by many privileges, and in it royal auditors to reside, and the barons of that province to be accustomed to gather for the conduct of its affairs; that the church of Theate, to which our venerable brother Felix, bishop of Theate, our domestic prelate, presides, among the other cathedral churches of that province is remarkable and worthy and deservedly worthy of metropolitan prelacy; and also that our beloved sons the community of the same city of Theate, for this reason, for the increase of the endowment of the episcopal table, of the same church of Theate annual revenues of three hundred ducats of the money of the said kingdom, or a certain sum of money for the purchase of the said annual revenues, are known to be ready to assign.
5 § 2. From these and certain other reasonable causes moved, having held mature deliberation among our brothers, to the praise and honor of almighty God, and also to the exaltation of the Catholic faith, the aforesaid church of Theate into a metropolitan church, with the jurisdiction and superiority of archiepiscopal dignity and the bearing of the cross and other metropolitan insignia, by the counsel of the same brothers, by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents we erect and institute; and to it the cities and dioceses of Lanciano, Penne and Hadria, for its province, and the prelates of the churches of Lanciano, Penne and Hadria existing for the time being as its suffragan bishops, and also our beloved sons the chapters of the churches and the clergy and people of the cities and dioceses of the same, as its provincial clergy and people: so that they themselves, as to all metropolitan and archiepiscopal rights, superiority and jurisdiction, to the archbishop of Theate existing for the time being are subject, and, as members obeying the head, ought to respond to the same in archiepiscopal rights, by similar counsel, authority and tenor aforesaid we grant and assign.
6 Moreover, new annual revenues for the augmentation of the aforesaid table's endowment, to be assigned by the same community as aforesaid, or to be purchased for their acquisition from a sum of money to be assigned by the community itself, once they have been assigned or purchased, we do now apply and appropriate, as if from then, and conversely, in perpetuity.1
7 § 4. Decreeing from now null and void, if otherwise concerning these things, by anyone, by any authority of the Roman Curia, knowingly or unknowingly should happen to be attempted. Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and ordinances and all other things to the contrary whatsoever. Let no one at all of mankind...
