PIO

3 « Diletto figlio, salute e Benedizione Apostolica.

Testo inglese

1 concerning the book of the Bishop of Sura.

2 To Our Beloved Son Prosper Guéranger, of the Benedictine Congregation of Gaul, Abbot of Solesmes

PIUS

3 "Beloved son, health and Apostolic Blessing. It is indeed to be lamented, beloved son, that there are some among Catholics who glory in this name, yet are imbued with utterly corrupted principles, and adhere to them so stubbornly that they not only plainly cannot subject their intellect to the judgment of this Holy See, confirmed also by the common assent and commendation of the Bishops; but rather, believing that the progress and happiness of human society rests entirely upon them, they endeavor to incline the Church to their opinion, and, thinking themselves alone to be wise, do not blush to designate all the rest of the Catholic family thinking otherwise by the name of the ultramontane party."

4 "To this madness they are driven so far as to attempt to refashion the very divine constitution of the Church and to adapt it to more recent modes of civil government; whereby they might more easily depress the authority of the supreme Rector and one appointed by Christ, whose prerogatives they fear. For this reason they boldly put forth certain pernicious doctrines often before condemned, as if they were undoubted or at least plainly free; they scrape together from the old defenders of these doctrines historical scraps, mutilated testimonies of writers, calumnies directed against the Roman Pontiffs, all manner of sophisms, and all these things, setting aside entirely the solid arguments by which they have been refuted a hundred times, they most impudently reassert; aiming at this, that they might move minds, and incite the men of their faction and the ignorant multitude against the common opinion of the rest."

5 "In this undertaking, beyond the harm of the perturbation brought upon the faithful, and of the gravest questions dragged to the streets, we are compelled to deplore an impudence matched by folly. For if they firmly held with the other Catholics that an ecumenical synod is ruled by the Holy Spirit, and by his breath alone defines and proposes what is to be believed, they would never bring themselves to think either that those things could be defined as matters of faith which are not truly revealed, or which harm the Church; or that human arts could be an impediment to the power of the Holy Spirit, so that those things which are revealed and useful to the Church might not be defined. They would certainly not think it forbidden to propose to the Fathers, in the manner that is fitting, the difficulties which they believe stand in the way of this or that definition, so that truth might emerge more clearly from the discussion; but with sole attention to this action, they would altogether refrain from the arts by which the suffrage of the people is wont to be captured in assemblies, and would quietly and reverently await the effect of heavenly illumination. "We have therefore judged that you have rendered most useful service to the Church, you who have undertaken to refute the principal matters from such writings, and have demonstrated their hostility, violence and arts with such solidity, such brilliance, such abundance of sacred archaeology and learning, that having embraced much in few words, you have stripped away all pretense of wisdom from those who wrapped their opinions in unskilled language; and having restored the truth of faith, law, and history, we profess to you a grateful mind for the volume offered; and we augur a happy and most ample outcome for your labors. As a pledge of this and of Our paternal benevolence, we most lovingly impart to you the Apostolic Blessing."

6 "Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on 12 March 1870, in the twenty-fourth year of Our Pontificate."
