1 tuam rei memoriam. Testo inglese

Leo, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for ever—

1 your memory of the matter. On account of the excellent preeminence of the apostolic see, in which after the blessed Peter, prince of the apostles, although with unequal merits, yet with equal authority we are constituted, laboring in a fertile field, we deem it worthy of a pontiff to plant and establish new legations of the Church, especially in places of Christ's faithful neighboring upon infidels, and in part sustaining schism, not only that the devotion of peoples, but also this very new planting of the name and faith of our Lord Jesus Christ and the eradication of schisms, may be increased and succeed more conveniently, and the salvation of souls may follow, and provinces and kingdoms may be illuminated. And we do this the more willingly in the aforesaid places, in which both from various occasions arising among mortals, yet especially from the destruction of schisms, by reason of necessity, it is generally seen to be necessary, and the wishes of Catholic kings are known to tend to this, that by the assistance and authority of a new legate, and the holy mother Church in the propagation of new planting, and mankind may more happily be able to attain the proposed reward of eternal felicity. Considering therefore, that in the whole kingdom of Poland, there exists one metropolitan, namely the principal church of Gnesen, to which all other churches of the said kingdom are subject by metropolitan right, and also the metropolitan church of Leopolis, in the lands of Ruthenia pertaining to the kingdom itself, by primatial right; and that if our venerable brother John of Lasko, the present and for the time being archbishop of Gnesen, should preside over his archiepiscopal province and the churches subject to him by metropolitan and the aforesaid primatial right, not only by metropolitan and primatial but also by legation right, and by reason of the dignity of the same primatial office should have this legation office: from this assuredly by the more salutary and diligent exercise of metropolitan and primatial jurisdiction, and for the convenience of the churches which are subject to him by metropolitan and primatial right, and of those now and for the time being presiding over them, as well as of the clergy and people, of the cities and dioceses of the same, which in their needs could more easily and conveniently have recourse to the same archbishop and legate, by reason of those things which by virtue of this legation he would be able to exercise, and to the devotion and honor of the same church of Gnesen and of the aforesaid kingdom, whose kings and inhabitants have always been devoted and faithful to the apostolic see; considering moreover that in the kingdom of England formerly and in Germany, certain archbishops, legates born, were erected by our predecessors: adhering to the footsteps of those predecessors, and to the great insistence which our dearest son in Christ Sigismund, the illustrious king of the said kingdom of Poland, has made and makes upon this, holding due respect, to the praise and honor of God, and to the exaltation of the Catholic faith, the aforesaid John of Lasko, the present, sent to us and the sacred Lateran Council as an orator for the said king, and for the time being archbishop of Gnesen, a legate born, with all the honors and customary burdens, so that henceforth he shall preside over his archiepiscopal and the aforesaid Leopolis provinces and churches subject to him by metropolitan and primatial right, not only by metropolitan and primatial, but also by legation right; and by reason of the dignity of his primatial office, that he may have the legation office in the same provinces by apostolic authority, and from our certain knowledge we make and constitute and also ordain. Nevertheless granting to him that he may use and enjoy all and singular privileges, liberties, preeminences, exemptions, immunities, honors and graces; and that he may freely and lawfully do and exercise and command, ordain and execute all and singular things which pertain in any way to legates born and those having such legation office, and which other legates born, especially the legate of Canterbury, who in their provinces by right, privilege and custom, may command, do and execute. Commanding by these presents all and singular suffragans, and the archbishop of Leopolis of the lands of Ruthenia, and others existing in the said provinces, that they obey and attend to the same archbishop and legate born, for the time being, in those things which pertain to him by reason of the office of legation, as is aforesaid, as to the offices of the same. Notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and any letters and privileges whatsoever granted; the tenor of which, as if expressed word for word, we hold as expressed in these presents, which as to the aforesaid we specially and expressly derogate from, and from all other things contrary whatsoever. Let no man be permitted to infringe this page of our creation, constitution, ordination, concession, mandate and derogation, or to dare to act contrary to it. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God, and of the blessed Peter and Paul his apostles. Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, in the year of the Lord 1515, on the 5th day of July, in the third year of our pontificate.
