1 Gregory, Bishop, servant of the servants of God. To our beloved sons William, of St. Lawrence in Palisperna, Sirleto, Gabriel, of St. Martin in the Mountains, Paleoto, Archangelo, of St. Caesarius, of Thebes, Felix, of St. Jerome of Illyricum, of Montealto, and Vincent, of St. Nicholas, Justinian, named, Priests Cardinal: greeting and apostolic blessing. That all occasion for disseminating pestilential opinions be removed and the tranquility of consciences be provided for, as far as in us lies, we most earnestly desire that the Index of Prohibited Books be reduced to such a form at the earliest opportunity that the faithful of Christ may understand which books they may safely read, and from which they ought to abstain, and that no scruple or doubt be left to anyone concerning this matter. Since the care of this matter has been entrusted to you by this holy see, so that in the work undertaken you may proceed with greater authority and more freely and expeditiously bring it to completion, God willing, and moreover so that this work, with the corrections of others removed which could introduce diversity, may proceed uniformly into the public, revoking and abolishing all and every faculty granted to persons of whatsoever status, order and condition by our predecessors and the aforesaid see from whatever causes and under whatsoever tenors and forms, and determining that henceforth it ought to benefit no one in any way, and that whatever shall be attempted contrary to these things by anyone, knowingly or unknowingly, is null and void, to you whose faith, prudence and experience are sufficiently known, or to the greater part of you, so that also with the aid of men of proven faith, skilled in sacred Theology and Canon Law, both secular and regular, to whom alone and for this purpose only you may grant license to hold and read prohibited books, we grant full and free authority and faculty to declare, open and define all and every obscurity and difficulty arising in the Index itself and its rules and henceforth emerging, to expurgate the books of heretics or suspect or in any way disapproved writers, to prohibit which books you shall judge to be prohibited, to permit which books you shall judge ought to be permitted, to place in that Index those not comprehended therein, to remove those permitted, to prohibit for sale those which shall seem fit everywhere, to permit to be read and held the prohibited ones and those expurgated by the work of experts and approved by you, to add, change, supply and amend what shall seem fit, and so that the matter itself may be carried out more easily and usefully, we command all and each Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots and other Ordinaries of places, and moreover Doctors, Masters, Booksellers, Printers, Librarians, Merchants, Customs Officials and all others of whatsoever grade, order or dignity, that in all things which shall appear to pertain to the explanation, reformation and direction of the said Index they obey you entirely and follow your command and authority without any resistance, under penalties and censures to be imposed at your discretion, and we grant you full and free authority and faculty to do and execute all other things pertaining to the same and otherwise necessary and opportune concerning these matters, as shall seem to you in the Lord expedient for the salvation and tranquility of souls. Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and ordinances and all other things to the contrary. We will, however, that copies of these letters, subscribed by a public Notary or your Secretary, and furnished with the seal of one of you, shall receive the same faith everywhere as would be given to these presents if they were exhibited or shown. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of our revocation, abolition, decree, concession and will, or to dare to act contrary to it. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
