ACONCIO, CONCIO, GIACOMO. - Born at Ossana in the Trentino at the beginning of the 16th century, died in England; according to Cheynel he was still living in 1613. Because of his anti-Trinitarian doctrines he had to leave Italy in 1557, and in Switzerland he joined other Italian refugees of whom Comander wrote: "they are quarrelsome and restless, they dispute over every trifle, they refuse to be instructed and cannot be moved from their obstinacy." From Switzerland he went to England around 1560 and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth his famous book Stratagemata Satanae.
It seems that in this book A. is the precursor of certain modern Protestants, since he writes that it is enough to know and profess a few articles of faith, deduced directly from Scripture, regarding all the others as indifferent. His aim, in reducing the dogmas of faith to very few, was to induce the sects to mutual tolerance, from which he did not exclude Catholicism. Among the indifferent dogmas he also includes the Incarnation; indeed, in his letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Grindal (1575-83), he clearly denies the divinity of Jesus Christ. He also wrote De Methodo sive recta investigandarum tradendarumque scientiarum ratione, in which he rejects ordinary dialectic and proposes to arrive at the truth by decomposing and recomposing the matter several times and examining it under different aspects.
