ACQUAVIVA, MARCELLO. — Born in 1531 into a noble Neapolitan family; died at S. Ornero in the Abruzzi on 18 March 1617. He was appointed archbishop of Orranto by Sixtus V on 25 February 1586. He was sent as nuncio first to the Republic of Venice and then, in 1590, to the dukes of Savoy, whom he attempted to reconcile with Henry IV. In 1595 he was sent by Clement VIII to Bologna as governor and vice-legate, but obtained exemption from that office just four months later.
