ACQUAVIVA, MARCELLO. — Born in 1531 to a noble Neapolitan family, he died in Sant'Omero in the Abruzzi on 18 March 1617. He was created Archbishop of Otranto by Sixtus V on 25 February 1586. He was sent as nuncio first to the Republic of Venice and then, in 1590, to the Duchies of Savoy, where he attempted to reconcile them with Henry IV. In 1595 he was sent by Clement VIII to Bologna as governor and vice-legate, but secured his release from this office just four months later.
