ADALARD, Saint. - Cousin of Charlemagne, born in Artois, probably at Huise near Audenarde in 733. After having lived a court life, whose vices disgusted him, he withdrew to live a monastic life (773) near Amiens. After two years he moved to Montecassino, but Charles's entreaties called him back to his homeland. Appointed abbot of Corbie, he governed the monastery with uprightness and promoted learning. He carried out diplomatic missions for Charlemagne in Italy and at Rome, and took part in the ecclesiastical and political affairs of the empire. To him is owed the founding of the abbeys of Corvey and of Herford. When Louis the Pious ascended the throne, he fell into disfavor and was relegated to the monastery of St. Philibert (Noirmoutier) on the island of Herio at the mouth of the Loire. Freed in 821, after having completed a mission in Saxony, he withdrew to Corbie (823), where he ended his life in holiness on 2 January 826.
