ADOLFO III, ARCIVESCOVO DI COLONIA

Also known as: Adolf III of Cologne

ADOLPH III, Archbishop of Cologne. - B. in 1511, d. in the castle of the Schauenburgs, from whom he was descended, at Brühl in 1556. A canon first of Cologne, then of Mainz and coadjutor of the archbishop of that archdiocese, Hermann of Wied, he was called to succeed him when he was deposed by Paul III. He found the country infested by the Lutheran heresy, to which his predecessor had opened the doors, and he strove to extirpate it, gathering an important council of suffragan bishops. He took part in the Council of Trent (1551) and, at his death, left the memory of a prudent and zealous prelate, sincerely devoted to Rome.
