ALBASPINA, NICOLA. — Ascetical writer of the Friars Minor Conventual, b. in France ca. 1550, d. after 1620. He was guardian of the convent of Toulouse, then Provincial of Aquitaine.
A learned humanist and aspiring orator, he left various spiritual opuscules and, mostly in French, commentaries on the Franciscan Rule and constitutions. His interpretations reflect somewhat his inconstancy (e aliquantum inconstans in viis suis, modo ad laxiorem, modo ad strictiorem observantiam deflectens [Wadding]). Notable works include: Fouet des Apostats, augmenté d'une response... (4th ed., Toulouse 1606); Traité de la vocation et fin des Religieux, et par spécial des Frères Mineurs (Tulle 1615); Commentarius de reformatione ad Pont. Paulum V (Toulouse 1610, Paris 1618).
