ALBERGONI, ELEUTERIO

Of great theological and biblical erudition, he taught in the Studium of Perugia at the age of 22, then philosophy in Bologna and theology in Milan. Provincial of Lombardy, he served as penitentiary of the Cathedral in Milan and Consultor of the Holy Office. A famous preacher throughout Italy, he was created bishop of Montemarano in the Neapolitan region by Paul V (14 Nov. 1611). He wrote many theological works (notable among them his *Resolutiones doctrinae scoticae*, Padua 1593, Lyons 1643), sacred orations for Advent, Lent, on the Psalms, *Sabbatine Sermons* on the excellences of the Blessed Virgin (ibid. 1631), on the Forty Hours; he also wrote on biblical exegesis (such as the *Concordance on the Gospels read on the five Sundays of Lent with the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin*, *Lessons on the Magnificat concorded with the Gospels*), and various spiritual works.
