ANASTASIUS, Apostle of the Macarians, Saint. - The personality of A. is still debated. Some identify him with a certain Radla, a Czech, a friend of St. Adalbert of Prague; others believe him to be a monk of S. Alessio in Rome, where he met Adalbert. It is certain that he followed the latter to Prague and that he was appointed abbot of Brewnow by him. From 995 he lived in Hungary as a missionary and was the first abbot of Martinsberg (1001). Others, on the other hand, identify A. with a certain Astrich (Ascherius) who brought the crown from Rome to Hungary for King Stephen (1001), and who later appears as bishop of Hungary in a synod of Frankfurt (1007), at the dedication of the cathedral of Bamberg (1012) and in the list of the bishops of Calocsa in Hungary (1015). A. died on 12 Nov. 1036 or 1039. He is not listed in the Roman Martyrology, but only in certain local martyrologies.
