ANDREA d'AUSTRIA. - Cardinal, morganatic son of Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, b. at Prague in 1558, d. at Rome on 12 Nov. 1600. He was created cardinal at the age of 8 by Gregory XIII and sought to obtain the imperial electorate by aspiring to the great churches of Germany, to which he could not gain access because of the defect of his birth. He was sent as legate to Poland to expel the Lutheran Truchess. Governor of Tyrol, bishop of
Bressanone and of Constance, and interim governor of the Netherlands, when his cousin Alberto relinquished their government in order to go and marry in Spain Isabella d'Asburgo, daughter of Philip II and lady of Flanders. He died piously at Rome, where he had arrived as a pilgrim and incognito to gain the jubilee indulgence, at the age of 43, without having received episcopal consecration.
