ANGENNES, ALESSANDRO d'. — Bishop, born in Turin on 29 June 1781 of a noble family, died in Vercelli on 8 May 1869. He was appointed by Pius VII in 1818 to the see of Alessandria and, on 24 February 1832, promoted by Gregory XVI to the archbishopric of Vercelli. A historian of Carlo Alberto, he was one of his most highly esteemed advisers at the time of the promulgation of the Statuto, and on 3 April 1848 was appointed senator. He also received the collar of the Order of the Most Holy Annunciation. He was one of the principal supporters of the Casa della Divina Provvidenza, founded by St Joseph Benedetto Cottolengo, who found encouragement and assistance in the prelate.
