APPIA, GIORGIO. - Waldensian pastor, son of Paolo, b. in 1827, d. in 1910. At Torre Pellice, between 1854 and 1855, A. founded a hospice for boys, an orphanage for girls and the school of the Coppieri. In 1859-61, in the midst of the Risorgimento, he was at Pinerolo. In 1861-62 he introduced Protestantism to Palermo and in the following three years to Naples, where, with the Waldensian community, he established a small evangelical normal school. In 1865 he taught exegesis at the Waldensian faculty of Florence and in 1866 he was in the Trentino with Garibaldi, as a co-worker of his brother Luigi, and a collaborator with Dunant in the founding of the Red Cross. In the following forty years, he resided in Paris as a Lutheran pastor. The most useful experience of his life as an ecclesiastic dissenting from Catholicism he had at Palermo where, in 1862, a vigorous religious controversy arose, carried on with sermons and pamphlets, among him, various priests, above all the canon Turano, and the bishop of Girgenti.
