APPIANI, ANDREA. - Painter, b. in Milan on 23 May 1754, d. there on 8 Nov. 1817. From his master Carlo Maria Giudici, wholly taken with the theories of Mengs, he received his training in the Neoclassical direction, to which he then knew how to give a distinctly Italian character, becoming among us its greatest representative. His fame is especially entrusted to portraits and frescoes (particularly notable are those in the royal palace of Milan), a fame that began with him as a painter of sacred subjects, that is, with the frescoes (1795) beneath the dome of S. Maria presso S. Celso in Milan, which led Parini to say that Mengs and Batoni had had a worthy successor. Among the sacred oil paintings we recall the Jacob of the church of Alzano and the Adoration of the Shepherds at Arona.
