ANSALDO, GIOVANNI ANDREA. - Painter, b. at Voltri in 1584, d. at Genoa on 20 Aug. 1638. He was influenced by Veronese, by Strozzi, by van Dyck, by Rubens and by the Lombard school. Among his very many works, we may mention the Magi of the oratory of the Cinque Piaghe in Genoa; the Pietà of the Accademia Ligustica; the Flight into Egypt of the National Gallery of Rome. Among the most notable painters of the early seventeenth century in Genoa, A. stands out especially for his virtuosity in perspective, for example those of the dome of the Santissima Annunziata in Genoa, executed in competition with Giulio Benso.
