ANSALDO, GIOVANNI ANDREA. — Painter, born in Voltri in 1584, died in Genoa on 20 August 1638. He was influenced by Veronese, Strozzi, van Dyck, Rubens, and the Lombard school. Among his very numerous works, we may mention the Adoration of the Magi in the Oratory of the Cinque Piaghe in Genoa; the Pietà in the Accademia Ligustica; and the Flight into Egypt in the National Gallery of Rome. One of the most noteworthy painters of the early seventeenth-century Genoese school, A. is distinguished especially by his virtuosity in perspective, for example in the dome of the S.ma Annunziata in Genoa, executed in competition with Giulio Benso.
