ARMELLINI, CARLO. - Lawyer, triumvir of the Roman Republic, b. in Rome in 1777, d. at Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Belgium) in 1863. During the Jacobin invasion of Rome (1798), A., a student at the Collegio Romano, celebrated republican ideals in a Latin poem. When the Pope returned, he extolled Pius VII and Leo XII in Italian verse. Highly versed in legal studies, he entered the ranks of the consistorial lawyers. With the accession of Pius IX he followed the Pontiff in his liberal policy and became a member of the Council of Deputies. With the Pope's flight, he assumed the ministry of the interior and represented Rome in the Constituent Assembly. Once the Republic was proclaimed, he was triumvir together with Mazzini and Saffi and devoted himself to directing legislative work. After the fall of the republic, he went into exile in Belgium. Of his sons, Torquato entered the Society of Jesus, and Augusto, a militant anticlerical, was mayor of Rome (1875), then, stricken by a long illness, returned to the faith and died an edifying death (1912).
